When these homeowners needed more usable living space, they looked below their feet instead of building outward.
Starting with an unfinished basement, we transformed the area into a finished family room, private bedroom, full bathroom, storage areas, and flexible living space designed to serve their family's needs for years to come.
This project required much more than simply finishing walls and adding flooring. To maximize functionality, we relocated mechanical systems, reworked plumbing, modified HVAC routing, added sound-control measures, and built custom features throughout the space.
The result is a basement that feels like a natural extension of the home rather than an afterthought.

One of the most important decisions in this project happened before drywall was ever installed.
The homeowners wanted the finished basement to feel open and functional, while also preserving flexibility for future plans. To accomplish that, we relocated the water heater, water softener, and other mechanical components to better utilize the available space and reduce future limitations.
By addressing those systems early, we were able to create a cleaner layout with larger usable living areas.

The new bathroom required extensive planning and infrastructure work.
Because the existing plumbing layout did not support the desired floor plan, portions of the concrete floor were removed to install and modify drain lines before reconstruction could begin.
The finished bathroom features a custom tiled shower, cultured shower base, tile flooring, and modern fixtures designed for long-term durability and easy maintenance.

Finished basements are often criticized for transmitting noise between levels of the home.
To reduce sound transfer, we installed a dedicated sound-dampening ceiling assembly designed to help limit both airborne noise and foot traffic noise between the basement and the main living areas above.
The goal was not soundproofing, but meaningful sound reduction that improves everyday comfort.

Several custom elements helped elevate this project beyond a typical basement finish.
A custom-built staircase creates a welcoming transition between levels. A stone accent wall adds warmth and character to the family room. Around the wood stove, specialized fire-resistant construction methods were used, including metal framing, dense mineral wool insulation, and cement board assemblies built to meet code requirements.
These details help the space feel intentional and integrated with the rest of the home.
The finished remodel completely changed the feel of the home.
The kitchen is now open, bright, and connected to the living space. The island provides seating, storage, prep space, and a natural gathering spot.
The bathroom is still appropriately sized for the home, but it no longer feels nearly as cramped. The improved layout makes the space easier to use and much more comfortable.
Most importantly, the homeowners gained the feel and function of a larger home without building an addition.

"Anymore, it's difficult to find someone that can do their job and that you can trust. Fortunately, I found Waal Construction during a Google search for basement remodels in my area.
Tracy is very time efficient and very detailed. This project included a floor-to-ceiling tiled shower, full bathroom construction, utility closet, bathroom closet, tile floors, electrical installation, new stairs, relocation of pressure tank, relocation of hot water tank, etc.
Throughout construction Tracy repeatedly made sure that my wife and I were satisfied with all progress. Tracy and crew were always professional and kind. Can't wait to get started with our next project with Tracy in the spring!"
